Express Health Check
At Uplands Pet Hospital we understand there can be time pressures that may not allow you to book an appointment in advance. We offer an express service where your pet is seen the same day you phone. Appointments are on a first come first serve basis. The cost of the express health check is less expensive as well as shorter compared to our regular comprehensive health exam. Call our clinic for details.

Urgent Health Exam
Accidents and illnesses happen, and when they do we are prepared to help. Our hospital is a state of the art facility equipped with the latest diagnostic equipment such as blood analysis machines, digital x-ray, scopes, urine analysis equipment, anesthetic machines, specific disease testing equipment, etc. We also have a special contagious disease room to contain and prevent the spread of disease to other animals. Our doctors and staff are there for you and your pet when you need us most. Just call.

Senior Health Check
Once your dog turns 7 years of age or your cat turns 8 years of age they are approximately equivalent to a 50 year old person. At this time, we recommend that they undergo a thorough senior wellness exam and diagnostic work-up. Even though you may believe your pet is normal, there are many disease processes that do not show any outward signs until the disease is quite advanced. More advanced diseases can be more difficult to treat and are not always as responsive to treatment as diseased diagnosed early. Early detection of diseases such as kidney disease, thyroid disease, etc. will allow us to administer the appropriate treatments to help extend your pets quality of life and lifespan.

Vaccinations
The proper vaccination schedule is essential for the control and prevention of the many contagious disease that your pet may come into contact with. Your veterinarian can work with you to determine a specialized vaccination schedule depending on your pet's age, where you live, and the types of activities you do with your pet. It is very important to follow up with booster vaccines, if required, for vaccines to work effectively. Additional vaccines may be needed if you are doing any traveling with your pet. Our veterinarians can advise you on any vaccines that your pet may require.

Puppy and Kitten Check-ups
At Uplands Pet Hospital we offer a complimentary (free) health check when you first get your puppy or kitten. It is a good idea to have a veterinarian examine your puppy or kitten as soon as you bring it home to make sure that there are no health concerns and to find out how you need to care for your new best friend. Just call the clinic and say that you just got your puppy or kitten and that you would like to make an appointment for the free health check. You will also be given a puppy or kitten package with information on everything you need to know about your new family member, including information on vaccines, nutrition, deworming and training.
Remembering that one calendar year is the same as 5 to 7 years for most dogs and cats, the annual health check is often extremely important to assure your pet's long term health.

The annual health check starts with a verbal update how the pet is doing at home, such as appetite, diet, activity level, and any behavioural changes that the owner may have noticed. We check weight, body temperature, and heart rate. The physical examination consists of a distant exam (how your pet moves), an oral exam including dental exam, examination of the skin and hair, visual eye exam, ear exam, palpation for abnormalities, leg palpitation, urinary exam, palpation of the vertebral column, body condition score exam, under the tail exam (rectal area exam), and any abnormalities that may be further investigated with the owner's permission. We may also discuss what the future holds for the pet such as travel plans, boarding, or camping activities.

During annual health checks we are often able to identify minor and/or major health issues which are correctable, and in turn the owner may be able to improve the pet's quality of life and lifespan.

Vaccination of healthy animals is an
extremely important way of preventing
contagious diseases and most of the
vaccines that are available today are very
reliable and effective when used correctly.
The veterinarian will advise you on what
vaccination protocol best fits your pet,
depending on your pet's age, health status,
where you live and what you do with your
pet. Our annual health checks are designed
to identify health problems, prevent disease
and prolong the lives of all companion
animals.
