Uplands Pet Hospital offers avian (bird) veterinary services;
however, the veterinarians at Uplands Pet Hospital are not avian
specialists and will refer cases to the
Avian and Exotics Clinic in
Calgary when necessary. We provide annual health checks, urgency and
emergency service, surgery, micro-chipping, vaccinations, behaviour
consultation, routine beak and nail trims, wing clipping, and
sexing. We also work with the local
Birds of Prey Centre (right) to
provide services to injured birds.

Did you know that budgies, parrots, and songbirds require regular veterinary attention too? We advise yearly visits to the vet for our feathery friends. During their yearly check up we will examine your birds beak, nails and feathers to determine if they require any specialized attention. A bird that doesn't groom it's feathers properly resulting in a ruffled, un-kept look is usually a sick bird and should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

The beaks and nails of birds need trimming just as our nails do. Trimming of nails and beaks can be done at home but you must be very careful not to cut too much off as there are blood vessels that can be damaged. Laparoscopy is a reliable technique whereby your bird's internal sex organs are inspected. During the procedure, the birds is anesthetized and a small incision is made in the skin to allow a small camera to visualize the bird's internal sex organs.
